Launching the “RumiCar on the Road” Project

Nice to meet you — I’m Sugiemon!

In Tokai Village, Ibaraki Prefecture, alongside my day job,

I’m a lifehacker who is completely absorbed in developing “RumiCar.”

I work with the desire to “make everyday life more fun by hacking it with technology!”

The steps of awareness, understanding, and trust

Up to now, I’ve repeated countless failures.

What I realized through them is that no matter how excellent a technology is,

  1. Awareness (getting people to know about it)
  2. Understanding (getting people to understand it)
  3. Trust (getting people to rely on it)

if you skip that order, it won’t reach anyone.

That’s exactly why, through this activity, I’ll start by getting

as many people as possible to become “aware” of “RumiCar.”

“What is RumiCar?” — here’s the answer

As I travel around the region, I’m hoping people will ask me,

“What is RumiCar?”  If they do, here’s how I’ll answer:

“RumiCar is a platform that lets you get started

with self-driving easily.”

Anyone can easily learn how autonomous driving works and try it out at low cost.

Spreading that gateway to the future is the purpose of this activity.

The travel log accelerates trust

Taking our mascot RumiCar along, I’ll visit Mito, Hitachi,

and places all across Ibaraki Prefecture.

Rather than just taking pictures of the scenery, I want to convey the people I meet

and the atmosphere of each place, together with RumiCar.

Getting people all over the country to know this “travel log”

will be a great force for deepening understanding of RumiCar

and earning trust. Just like the

Event Participation List on this site, I’ll give shape to the

excitement I find along the way, and start by getting

this activity widely known!

A Report from the RumiCar Niigata Branch

The self-driving project “RumiCar” is currently at Level 2, but we have now entered a new phase of trial and error, aiming to achieve “Level 5” — full autonomous driving.

As a major first step, we adopted “MediaPipe,” Google’s open-source framework, in order to master advanced image-processing techniques. We implemented a “hand-sign remote control” that analyzes hand movements from camera footage in real time to operate the machine.
